Core Knowledge / Curriculum

Lincoln Academy meets the individual needs of its students by providing creative, innovative hands-on learning. By utilizing the Core Knowledge Scope and Sequence developed by E.D. Hirsch Jr., the students develop higher-order thinking skills and build on their foundation of knowledge from year to year through their varying subjects.

Lincoln Academy?s language arts curriculum includes three main programs. First, to develop a strong base in phonemic awareness and phonics, Lincoln Academy?s kindergarten through third grade teachers are trained by the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education in a multi-sensory teaching approach based on Orton-Gillingham principles. This direct instruction method includes a 5-part lesson plan presented to students using their visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning pathways. The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education believes that a balanced approach is the key to success in teaching reading, writing and comprehension. Second, to provide a strong literature program, Lincoln Academy uses Guided Reading techniques, where teachers work with small groups of students on similar reading levels. We also incorporate Shared Reading where the teacher can model reading and focus on specific reading skills including, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Our third language arts program focuses on writing using The Write Source. Through this program we are able to effectively teach students how to go through the writing process (pre-write, rough draft, revise, edit, and publish) and use the six traits of writing in all the different writing genres. These language arts programs combined ensure that Lincoln Academy students become successful readers and writers.

Lincoln Academy's mathematics program teaches all the fundamental facts and thinking skills with plenty of review and cross-curricular application. We create mathematical fluency by building basic skills, developing math concepts, and encouraging problem-solving fluency. These goals are accomplished by using Saxon Math, which uses proven methods to produce serious results, including higher test scores.

The curriculum is made more successful through the teachers driving it. Teachers at Lincoln Academy must meet a high standard. Teachers are expected to the students' intellect, acknowledge the worth of each child, and believe all children can succeed. We have hired certified teachers who demonstrate a commitment to learn new curricula and methods of instruction.

Lincoln Academy meets or exceeds all state standards for Kindergarten through Ninth Grade. Our curriculum is well-rounded, also including sciences, social studies, world and American history, arts, music, health, physical education, character education, foreign language and emotional intelligence. Students who need to be more challenged or need additional assistance are given the opportunity to learn at their individual ability level. The opportunities afforded at Lincoln Academy will inspire each student to develop their gifts and realize their potential. Ultimately this process will encourage confidence in students and create self -motivated learners.
